Happy 20 uhm 18

Life is racing at Mach speed and it feels like I literally need to hold on to something grounded to prevent myself from getting whiplash.

Wasn’t it 2014 like 5 seconds ago?Perhaps it isn’t that bad, perhaps my brain has just been set to cruise mode for the past 3 odd years.

What I have realised on this little mission called life is that I have been benched, looking on from the side lines for a few years. Don’t misunderstand me, I’ve done the cliche new year new you, but never committed. Well not really.

So this year I have decided to step up my game. (I am hoping by writing my “resolutions/goals” down as many times humanly possible that I might actually follow through on some of them.

1. Mindfulness, I have spoken about this here.

So this year I would like to continue my mindfulness journey, in all aspects of my life. My home, relationships, eating habits, exercise, well you get the point.

2. Minimalism, not the art movement, the actual concept.

So what is this minimalism thing?Minimalism is a tool that can assist you in finding freedom.

Freedom from fear.

Freedom from worry.

Freedom from overwhelm.

Freedom from guilt.

Freedom from depression.

Freedom from the trappings of the consumer culture we’ve built our lives around.

Real freedom.

That doesn’t mean there’s anything inherently wrong with owning material possessions. Today’s problem seems to be the meaning we assign to our stuff: we tend to give too much meaning to our things, often forsaking our health, our relationships, our passions, our personal growth, and our desire to contribute beyond ourselves. Want to own a car or a house? Great, have at it! Want to raise a family and have a career? If these things are important to you, then that’s wonderful.

Minimalism simply allows you to make these decisions more consciously, more deliberately.

If it had to be summed up in a single sentence, Minimalism is a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important—so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and freedom.

Basically it all boils down to less things more life. In our consumer driven life we are being brain washed with buy more More MORE.

You need this designer watch or handbag to make you happy, you need this exercise machine to make you skinny, you need this teeth whitening toothpaste to enhance your smile, people will like you and then you will be happy.

Uhm no, all you will have is a fancy expensive watch/bag, a big machine and maybe whiter teeth. Happiness doesn’t work like that.

I have realised that I get anxious when I look at all miss M’s stuff, mostly toys. And most of it is unnecessary, so that is probably where I will start.

I have also decided that this year I will not be buying anything other than food and toiletries. It might seem like a far reach but I often go to the shop and walk out with so much more than what I actually need.

{I will let you know how this works out for us-I do like buying shi..stuff and my daughter seems to have hoarding tendencies}

So in a nutshell this is what I am striving for in 2018. (Along with the usual being a better person, having more patience, losing a few extra kilograms)
